My week at Norfolk:Constructionarium. It's this project we're supposed to do for a week, working under Laing O Rourke, a construction firm - build a mini engineering structure and my team's got the Barcelona Tower. People say it's apparently the easiest one as it looks really simple and we ended up being the first to finish our project.
A week of waking up at 6am and finishing at around 7ishpm, with only half an hour of lunch without internet is crap. After just an hour of break to shower and have our dinner, again we have to meet up to have a group and give some feedback to our lecturers and senior civil engineers.
Our team consists of 24 students under a Laing O Rourke engineer, Paul. Being the tiniest in the group does have its disadvantage. What I did for the week was to sit on planks, hold on unsteady structures, carry strings and wires and clean up the site for safety reasons. Carrying a piece of string 20cm long was a laugh. Kana pandang randah wah di sana. I keep getting "Are you sure you're okay with carrying this .....?", "Do you wanna carry two instead of three?", "Hey ____, do you wanna help Naq with holding the ___? It's a bit high". Kurang asam.
After a few days of feeling small (literally), sasak jua sudah, start tia angkat yang barat-barat like the steel fences, dig holes, untying wires... hahahaha kesian eh.
This is the stuff we need to wear at the Construction site, along with boots, and these boots are really cool. Bet any of you can step on them without hurting my toes cos they've got these steel caps in them. Awesome tapi they cut through my ankles. And those supposedly goggles. Pretty much useless to wear cos I still had some sand blowing into my eyes. Damn the weather was cold and windy.
This is the reinforcement for the foundation of the tower. Afterwards we put this baby inside the hole we dug to be poured with cement later.
Ani shear links we made to be put into DAPs (i still do not know what that stands for but it's just placed on the ground to connect to the tower using a cable). Here a lot of whacking is involved which, to my resentment, i didn't get to do as I was busy supporting a plank where the shear links are hung to be connected properly.
At the end of the day, concrete is poured into the hole and foundation of the tower's done :)
This is where the DAPs are supposed to be. There are 6 in total around the tower. The strings and poles are used to ensure that the DAPs are placed correctly in the middle.
Again, this is the pouring of concrete into the DAPs and the first formwork. That's the first column of the tower.
Placing the DAPs into the excavation.
This is the reinforcement of the first column. The reinforcement is to prevent the formwork to pacah easily.
This is another group of the team. They're doing some surveying to ensure the DAPs are dug at the correct position. I forgot to mention that our team is divided into smaller groups, one's doing the formwork and reinforcement (Group 1), one's doing the DAPs, superstructure and excavation (Group 2) and one's doing the leveling and surveying (Group 3). I was in Group 1 at first sekali migrate ke Group 2 pasal Group 1 inda siuk and requires more physical work and doing stuff involving heights so yeah, not something Naq could handle.
Lagi, pouring concrete arah the 2nd formwork. This stuff is usually done at the end of the day pasal we have to allow the concrete to dry.
Ni nah, digging yang I did. I'm never in the picture though, probably would look stupid doing this, basar bah dorang ani.
That guy yang menunjuk atu is Paul, ia yang guide us throughout the project without actually helping us do our work. Biarkannya saja kalau kami salah, especially with the surveying where we found out coordinates kami salah after finishing the foundation so terpaksa make new points on the second day.
This is what I did as well, measuring and writing things with the marker. Bloody fun.
DAPs, nicely hammered, measured and marked by our group.
The DAP after concrete dries.
This is the next task our group has to do, the superstructure which was drilled to the tower at the end of the Constructionarium. I think this was the fun bit, it's like some big jigsaw yang we had to figure which goes to where and screw the pieces in place. Took two days to finish.
The scaffold and people fixing the superstructure in place. This was the last thing we did and everyone got to be at the top of the scaffold, except me cos I'm such a coward. In my defense, it was cold :P
Here's everyone with the finished tower :D that weird thing is a cardboard penguin someone nicked from an older structure yang some previous students buat. It was actually raining as well, which is why we were all wearing those raincoats, which we get to keep.
I did learn some things while I was there, it also made me realise that I may be more suited as a consultant than a contractor, if I am going to pursue a career in civil engineering.
I guess that's all I'm going to say, getting pretty tired now (By the way, managed to get darker bagas working on the construction site atu). Watched the season finale of the last season of Prison Break dah. Not satisfied. Not going to say why here.
HAHAHHAHA. Funny video of the day.
